Haiti Plunge February 14-23, 2014
As our team prepares to leave for the villages of Desab and Tima I invite you to pray for this 19 member team comprised of High School students, Sr. Eunice Tassone ssj, Fr. Matt Alcombright, Catherine Landry (school teacher) and myself (Patricia Monroe).
I share these thoughts from Pope Francis with you as I have with our team...
"Life grows by being given away, and it weakens in isolation and comfort. Indeed, those who enjoy life most are those who leave security on the shore and become excited by the mission of communicating life to others." (EG II-10)
"Here we discover a profound law of reality: that life is attained and matures in the measure that it is offered up in order to give life to others. This is certainly what mission means." (EG II-10)
Our parish team will take these words with us and reflect on them as we minister to the people of Haiti.
Haiti Plunge Project 2014
Saint Mary’s Parish Longmeadow is sisters with the Haiti Plunge Project out of North Adams. Our parish Youth Group consisting of 12 high school students from Longmeadow (Emily Coughlin, John Croll, Nicole Denver, Gabby Fernandes, Anna MacDonnell, Jon Mack, Ali Melchionna, Tim McGann, Brendan Philbin, Emmett Shea, Sydney Walt, Connor Strain) as well as adult volunteer, Catherine Landry and our Director of Faith Formation, Patti Monroe, will be traveling to Haiti to participate in this immersion program. The Haiti Plunge has been in existence for over thirty years and was started by high school students at the Church Outreach to Youth Center in North Adams. We will be living and working in the village of Desab located in the Cabaret region of Haiti.
The Haiti Plunge has taken steps to improve the situation in the Desab village and its 9 neighboring villages. We have capped a spring for drinking water, built primary schools in three of the villages, and built a bakery where our 6,000 villagers can go daily for fresh bread. During our nine days in the village this year we will be taking part in the reforestation project, putting up BB hoops and running clinics in other villages. We also continue to develop the Embroidery Industry with the Woman’s Group by starting to teach the older girls in the villages. Our group has grown to include 30 women from the 9 village coop. The women began last year to make items for sale in the US. The money they receive for goods sold will be used to support their family.
We hope that by going to Haiti we not only help further the objectives of the Haiti Plunge, but also grow as individuals. The opportunity to interact with people whose life situations are so different from ours will, we hope, allow us a perspective on life and humanity that we did not previously have. We hope that by participating in this experience we can recognize the essential goodness we are called to when Jesus said “Whatsoever you do for the least of my brothers you do for me.”
We know that this trip will provide us with new insight into improving the world around us, and this could not be done without the financial support and prayers of the people of our parish and the community of Longmeadow. Please help us make our vision, and our hopes of this trip a reality. Thank you and God bless.
